In the previous book, a solitary hippo politely refused to join other animals in various activities — dancing, shopping, drinking juice. Was she rejected and isolated, or just, you know, a bit of a loner? And when, on the last page, she finally agreed to hang out with everyone else, what to make of the armadillo who then appeared, with the line “But not the armadillo”? Some found it off-putting — a testament to the persistence of loneliness and alienation, a “Bartleby” for toddlers. Others applauded the self-determination exhibited by both the hippo and the armadillo. I am here to tell you that Boynton has settled the question: The armadillo, “with his armadillo nose,” really likes to wander around by himself, following that sausage-shaped schnoz “where it goes.” He sniffs flowers, picks cranberries, stretches out languidly for a nap. He hears music from far away. Probably the biggest disappointment a childrens book could be. We loved “but not the hippopotamus†and just assumed this one would be just as good. The two are nothing alike and the last page of this one is so weird. See photo. We pre-ordered we were so excited. Thankfully it wasn’t expensive.
Generally speaking I love Boyton books. I've got five kids and have been reading Boyton books to small children for nearly 17 years. But not the Hippopotamus has been a favorite of several of my children, so when I saw there was a book about the armadillo I didn't hesitate to pre-order it. In hindsight, I should have waited. The book is ok and the illustrations are the typical humorous Boynton illustrations we've come to know and love. The last page of the book is where it takes a weird turn. Another reviewer has already posted a picture of the armadillo and his long nose that you're supposed to stroke because he's worried. It just seems so out of place and strange and really out of character with other Boynton books, even Fuzzy, Fuzzy, Fuzzy wasn't strange like that, and that was a book based on a tactile reading experience. I think we will likely pass this book on to someone else. It's the first Boynton book that I'm truly sorry I purchased.
Some of the other reviewers on here have been complaining about this story. I, for one, think that it's a lovely little book.The hippo in 'But Not the Hippopotamus' feels some anxiety about not being involved when everybody else is meeting up with friends and being social (e.g. 'A moose and a goose, together have juice). She feels very happy when she decides to join in (But YES the hippopotamus!).The armadillo in this book is completely happy to enjoy his own company. He likes the other animals, and is happy when he meets up with somebody he knows, but chooses not to join the Hippo when she runs by. He'd rather just let his interests lead him where he'd like to go.Both the Hippo and the Armadillo remind me of my toddler- who sometimes likes a crowd and sometimes likes to be on her own. That's why we're keeping both 'But not the Armadillo' and 'But not the Hippopotamus' on our bookshelf.
This is our first time ever being disappointed by a Boynton book, we've had her books in our family for 13 years! We, like others who have reviewed this book, were so excited to see this book coming out because we love "But Not the Hippopotamus" so much! We didn't give it a thought, we just bought it expecting the same witty and fun style of book. That was not this book at all....the last page was the weirdest of all. My older kids were asking me what it meant when it was over. At least my 3 year old is too young to realize it's super weird and just enjoys being read to. I had to wonder, was this a joke? Because her fans are so loyal, they'll just buy whatever she puts out there in the book world? She was right then.... Honestly she could have kept this series going with the same format as "But Not the Hippopotamus" and tagged a new animal at the end of each book. I would have bought them all! We are still huge fans though and we'll continue to buy books but maybe not preorder them like this one. We just discovered the Pookie series and it's a hit!
We love Boynton books. They are favorites of my kids, and are normally written so well that I could recite them in my sleep. I was very excited about the release of "But Not the Armadillo" and pre ordered right away, but I wish I hadn't. It's nothing like it's predecessor. The story, the cadence, everything about it is odd. My son brought it over to me to read as soon as we opened the box, and then he got off my lap and left after just three pages. This is not one that will be read over and over again. I wouldn't be surprised if it never gets picked as a bedtime story at all.
This one’s a charmer. This board book for the little ones has colorful pictures, it rhymes, and it can help fill a quiet break. But, I suspect some creative adults may take advantage of the armadillo’s activities and turn the reading into an interactive activity. Most armadillos are superb at strolling, but did you know they can hop, too? And they like to sniff?It also has a very subtle hint of learning to it; some people (oops) - some creatures are fast, and some are slower and go at their own pace. Like armadillos.An old friend who materialized in another board book in 1982 makes a brief appearance on one page; "But Not the Hippopotamus.†You could consider it as an optional companion board book. It’s charming, too, but not to worry; each book is definitely a stand-alone.Finally, an invitation at the end may inspire the kids to want come close to touch the book. Empathy is a good skill to learn, too.
Not that great. Was expecting more like but not the hippopotamus. The last page is so strange, it asks you to stroke the armadillos nose. Do not waste your money, it is nothing like her other books - and we have them ALL.
We LOVED But Not the Hippopotamus but this really wasn't a sequel. My son just didn't love it like I'd hoped he would. The last page is also really odd and any older children or immature husbands might find it inappropriately funny.
