Out of the Ashes is a wonderful story of redemption set in Curry, Alaska, once a small, thriving railroad town with a rich history, though presently uninhabited. Curry rested - as the title of the first book in The Heart of Alaska series reveals - in the shadow of the massive and majestic Mount Denali, its foremost feature being the Curry Hotel.There are multiple “redemptions†as characters in the story find their true and divinely intended identity and purpose - Jean-Michel and Katherine, both suffering in anguish from wounds suffered in the years since they had parted, learn that burdens shared are lighter. And Collette, Jean-Michel’s spoiled, self-absorbed and bratty younger sister, through bitter experiences brought on by her own selfishness and errors in judgment, finds loftier purpose in life, learning that satisfaction resides in serving others. Even Mrs. Johnson, whose abrasive manner was seen in the first book in the series, is brought to a clearer realization of her need - and capacity - to love and be loved. There is a comical aspect to Mrs. Johnson’s less-than-gracious treatment of Mr. Ferguson, who was brought in by the hotel manager to assist her in the kitchen, and who seems to be oblivious to her hostility.In my mind, the story revolves around the delightful, beloved-by-all character of Cassidy Brennan, modeled from Cassidy Hale, who at age 15 lost her life in 2015 in a tragic automobile accident at Holyoke, Colorado. Cassidy is truly Christ-like, with a penchant for perceiving others’ needs, and blessing everyone by bringing out the best in those who come into contact with her. Cassidy Hale must have possessed these same characteristics in real life; and as long as Cassidy Brennan lives in these stories - likely many years - Cassidy Hale will live, not only in the memory of those who knew her in life, but also by others who like me were not similarly blessed.This is historical fiction, part of the rich background and setting being the Curry Hotel, which was once a luxury resort, meticulously researched by the authors and thoroughly detailed in “In the Shadow of Denali.†A bit of French history provides further background in the Druze revolt in Syria, which provides the backstory for Jean-Michel’s fictional part in it.This is a great story, eminently deserving my 5-star rating.
This is another wonderful story (" Out of the Ashes) written by one of my favorite writers; details, place, story lines and people place you in Curry Alaska. I love following Cassidy, John, Allen ,Thomas, Mrs.Johnson, Mr Bradley into this story and watching Jean-Michel, Katherine, Mrs.Harrison and our beloved Collette become part of the Curry family. They bought more than baggage of clothes, but also life struggles unfold here at Curry! It was amazing living among these loving characters. The writers lifted you from present day back to the place and I walked, !ived, and loved every part of this story. Thanks again for your love of God that always making reading your work all the more joyous! I'm ready for number three and more! Eddist
I have read many Christian fiction stories over the years. This book was by far one of the very best. This book did not follow along the path that most of the other books I have read. It was captivating and never predictable. The scripture was used beautifully and changed me in so many ways. It is a story of redemption and love. Not just as in human relationships, but more so in the redemption for our own soul. Thank you, Kim and Tracie for this beautiful book.
I have always loved Tracie Peterson's books. This one, written with Kimberely Woodhouse, does not disappoint. The time and effort that went in to the research of the area and the time period shines through in the story. Relatable characters, elements of suspense, and ever present faith draws you in to the story. As you read, you find yourself cheering on the characters toward a happy ending. Will they find themselves? Will they accept Christ? Will they come to love one another? You will not be disappointed with this book (or its prequel). Wonderful read!
Loved being with this author again. Katherine and Jean Michael story was a very heart retching. But always changed when they met God. The had some great friends and family to help them through their turmoil. Looking forward to reading more in the series.
I always enjoy Tracie Peterson's books (I have read many over the years), and this one did not disappoint. Having grown up in Alaska, I have found her books to always be accurate. It took me a a chapter or two to get all the characters straight, but the story lines all came together beautifully. I've already preordered the next book in the series.
