I wavered whether this book deserved two or three stars. Dr. Popcak has a good thesis, and there are some great pieces of advice in this book. However, my dissatisfaction with his premise is three-fold. First of all, while I would agree that getting your children to do the right thing because of a good relationship with their parents is better than forcing them into obedience, I think that this step still misses the mark. Ultimately, I want my kids to do the right thing because it's the right thing, not to simply please me. So, problem number one.Secondly, many of the anecdotes and "research" that Dr. Popcak uses utilize invalid arguments better left to a 7th grade research paper. He uses studies that have been proven invalid to bolster his argument against sleep training. (And makes no mention of the multiple current research demonstrating that it does not harm babies/children.) He utilizes Louis and Zellie Martin as models for his thesis, blithely ignoring the reality that these two saints (who truly were tremendous, holy models for us all) used wet nurses, cribs and -- gasp -- sent their children away to boarding school. And perhaps my favorite in which he links the Japanese habit of bed-sharing to the "wonderful" nature of Japanese culture. I am in no way making any judgement for or against the Japanese, but to use cause and effect in this case is not only unsupported but also either ignorant or dishonest. Just read a little bit about the State-sponsored Japanese POW camps in Japan during WWII, and you would also raise your eyebrows at Dr. Popcak's example to equate bed-sharing with creating a model culture. I'm no PhD, but the many holes in his evidence take away from any credibility elsewhere. Finally, I wanted to read a book about raising holy kids. Instead, the advice for each age range reminded you that "your kids are great now" because you nursed them until age 5 and they're still sleeping in your bed. He repeats this over. And over. And over. I am in no way anti-attachment. There is a great deal of positive research demonstrating the value of kids being attached to their parents. I've room-shared, baby-worn, and extended my nursing. But this isn't an recipe (if there is one) for raising holy kids. Atheists do this too. Saints Louis and Zellie Martin did not. If Dr. Popcak wants to write a quality book about parenting, he needs to let go of his agenda and focus on the multitude of other variables as well.
I'm not a Catholic, I'm Mormon, but this book jives with my beliefs about parenting and contains really inspiring ideas and beautiful and motivating language that encourages me on rough days or when I let the busyness and craziness of life put me into a parenting rut. When I read this book it gets me focused again, reminds me of the 12 things I need to do to establish that loving bond with my children, and helps me get back to "self-donative" parenting. Great ideas and fresh insights that run counter to the modern view of parenting in ways that are most convenient for the parent, rather than best for the child. Awesome book.
This author has a regular radio talk show on EWTN. They are very sound, reasonable, knowledgeable and fear God. So why does it matter to fear God? Because if we don't then we'd be better off to be Rambo. I am not Rambo, nor are my kids. I don't want them to meet Rambo, unless they are hostages in war torn places and Rambo is the only salvation. I believe that God can make Rambo. Not the other way around.
There are many books from secular sources as well as other Christian sources which I have read. Only this book utilized the science of the mind, the love of the heart and God's wisdom to pull it all together in assisting families grow in love and virtue. They give useful advice and practice methods which have improved our family experiences and helped us grow closer. Parents who read this will appreciate the Truth that lies within it pages and if practiced will see amazing growth in themselves as parents and in their children. This book is written for catholics in mind but I believe that everyone can learn from the wisdom of the authors.
There are no magic bullets written in this book, but lots of reassuring, sensible-sounding parenting techniques. It covers kids from baby to adulthood and I found it very well-written and informative. If you're Catholic, you'll benefit from their perspective especially. If you're not, it's probably still a good read and I doubt the Catholic angle will bother you. Either way, the fact that they are parents of several kids as well as medical professionals is pretty encouraging. Highly recommended.
This is the definitive guide to Catholic parenting. It requires a thorough read, and a dedication to the topics to execute. In doing so you will find, not only grace filled children, but also the sanctification of self giving love as a result.
Excellent book for any parent who (like me) wants to start over and raise (almost) perfect Catholic kids. It gives you tools + resources for every age and stage in your child’s life. From birth to adolescence. If you’re wanting a parent “do-over†(as is suggested in the book for kids), this book is a must!
Great, informative, faith based parenting guide. I love Dr. Greg and Lisa Popcek and I feel reaffirmed in my parental instincts by their literature and I learn how to faithfully nurture my children to be wonderful citizens and ultimately lead them on the path to Heaven.
